Emirati athletes provide an important example
I was delighted to read several weeks ago of the successful venture by Elham Al Qasimi, a courageous and determined 26-year old Emirati, to become the first UAE national and the first Arab woman to reach the North Pole. She will, I am confident, prove to be an inspiration to many other young Emiratis showing them that it is possible to have a goal and with determination and guts, to reach it. If the UAE had a system, as do some other countries, of awarding medals to individuals who have excelled in their chosen field or endeavour, then she would surely be a leading candidate for the next honours list.

Parents seek prestige, but we still want our dream jobs
When I was in the fourth grade, I wanted to become a palaeontologist. That’s not a word a nine-year-old would typically have in her vocabulary (or even attempt to pronounce). But I was reading a book on dinosaurs at the time and thought how much fun it would be to dig and look for bones when I grew up. A quick survey around the office where I work resulted in more interesting dreams. When they were younger, my Emirati colleagues wanted to become directors, cartoonists, veterinarians, fashion models, professional football players and teachers. So how did we all end up working for the government?
